Chairs is a film-theater project inspired from an absurd play by Eugene Ionesco.
In its original form it is a story about alienation, hope, fear, self-reflection, human interrelationships, life and its absurdity, death and its acceptance:
a farce of death...

a farce of death...
Avoiding a literal adaptation, in a rather personal interpretation of the original play, combined with a series of collective improvisation workshops with the heads of departments, our own story has shaped around a central Character, a MAN, which, having lived for nothing, finds himself suspended in Here, where he must figure out what he has died for in order to find rest.
As an added reflection to his struggle, a series of other characters appear that play the role of the good and bad forces on his path, as they question and confront the Man but also give him a sense of safety.

As a metaphor, the story tries to recreate a journey through the experience of death as a fulfilling moment of truth in result of a life long experience, and such through the struggle that anticipates this final resignation of the human.
The story tells about a Man who as he thinks he is dead, finds himself in Here, where the lost Souls wait, to figure out who he is and move on.
Only problem is that he finds it hard to remember anything in Here, and while he struggles to recreate his life amongst the shadows, an invisible production crew appears in the Darkness, convincing him to play a part in their show.
This is easier said than done, as the characters are inexperienced and ruthless, making the Man’s experience unbearable.
At the end, The Man learns the importance and beauty of friendship and companionship & the Crew come to the understanding that there is always more than just one way of doing things and the final product matters less than the experience of the process, a continuous, repetitive creation and recreation of everything and nothing.
Finally, it is a little farce, as none of the events really happen as they are told. The end reveals a middle-aged Man, in a theatre, alone. He opens his eyes. He smiles.
He looks up and walks out of the door.

Original IdEea
In a mix of mystery and crude imagined realism, with abrupt intermissions that shake the viewers expectation, and a touch of ambiguity, I hope to tell a story that translates the mood of the Theater, into an entertaining and captivating Film.
In the beginning there was a MAN... & a CHAIR...
The ProceSs
For six months a group of Creative Directors and Heads of Departments of the Film Production have taken part of weekly Improvisation Workshops in which they have developed stories together about a Man who might have died. Each workshop offered a new Medium of Storytelling, like sounds, music, movement, mime, pattern design, masks and objects, costumes, images...
Only through experimentation we could find a new collective story that could express the mood of Ionesco's theatre art into the film avoiding a literal adaptation of the play.
Then there was the BOY... & the CREW...
